After many years of nonprofit leadership and the privilege of getting to know hundreds of organizations through my work with the M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust, I am pleased to offer my services to you at BoardTrek Nonprofit Consulting. Our small Pacific Northwest based company is focused on helping guide nonprofit organizations and their leaders into the future by offering our services in board governance, strategic planning, leadership development and organizational change. Always feel free to contact me with your thoughts and questions. – Dave Coleman
An interest in serving
At almost every turn in life, Dave has been involved in activities that have added value to the common good. From his earliest days as a Boy Scout, he has been engaged in a wide variety of programs involving youth, public schools, healthcare, nonprofits, church, ministries and service clubs.
Vocational calling
In his years at the M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust, Dave met scores of people who make a difference in a wide range of nonprofit organizations, engaging them and learning about their work. In addition to his grant making activities, he helped launch the foundation’s Christian leadership initiative. Prior to his work at the Murdock Trust, Dave offered many years of leadership at a variety of levels in Youth for Christ. During the first half of those years he was engaged in youth work in Tacoma, Portland, and Spokane, and was YFC’s executive director in Tacoma and Spokane. Then he went on to serve at the executive leadership level, regionally (Pacific Northwest) and nationally. For many years he was engaged in the organization’s leadership development programs, and led YFC’s work in bringing excellence to board governance activities in local communities throughout the nation. Dave enjoys public speaking and has been warmly received by audiences in many different settings.
Education
From his hometown of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Dave went on to do his undergraduate work at Whitworth University, and later earned two masters degrees at Portland Seminary at George Fox University (theological studies) and Chapman University (human resources management). Most recently he studied board governance at Portland State University’s Institute for Nonprofit Management. He is a member of the Alliance for Board Effectiveness.
Consulting
Dave is consistently interested in helping people and their organizations to be more effective in accomplishing their mission. While he has had the opportunity to consult with various organizations outside of his own over the years, his passion now finds him building the outreach of services offered by BoardTrek Nonprofit Consulting. In February of 2014 his new book, Board Essentials: 12 Best Practices of Nonprofit Boards, was published.
Personal
Dave and his wife Joyce have been married for more than five decades. They reside in the Tacoma, Washington suburb of Lakewood, where they are active in church and Dave is a member and past president of his Rotary Club. They have three adult children living nearby, and eight grandchildren who bring them great joy. He enjoys reading, presidential history, swimming, and automobiles, especially an appreciation for sports cars, old and new.
